The rest of this brochure was written by the museum. This page is in plain words, from the people who made the museum up.
WHO COUNTS THE VISITS
We do, on our own machine. Both of these sites load a small counter from analytics.tinymachines.io, which runs Umami on a server we rent and administer ourselves. No advertising network and no analytics company is involved, and the figures are not shared with anyone.
WHAT A VISIT RECORDS
- which page you opened, and when
- the website that linked you here, cut back to its origin: we can see that someone arrived from a search engine or a forum, never which search or which thread
- your browser, operating system, device type and screen size
- a rough idea of the country or region, worked out from your network address at the moment of the visit
- one named action: following a link from this brochure to the prologue, and which part of the page it was followed from
That last one is the only question this brochure is really asking: do the people who read about the museum go and play it.
WHAT WE DON'T DO
- no cookies, and nothing kept in your browser for counting
- no advertising identifiers, and no profile that follows you to other sites
- no recording of your screen or your clicks
- no attempt to work out who you are
- query strings and anything after a
#are left out before a visit is recorded - if your browser says Do Not Track, the counter sends nothing at all
YOUR SAVED GAME
The prologue keeps your progress in your own browser, on your own device, using its IndexedDB storage. It is never uploaded, and we cannot read it. Clearing this site's data clears it, and some browsers clear it by themselves after a week or so away. The game reports nothing about how you play: not which rooms you reach, not which puzzles you solve, not how long you stay.
THE SERVER'S OWN LOGS
Both sites are plain files served by Amazon CloudFront. Its access logs record the time, the file asked for, the response, the browser's user-agent string and a network address. They are delivered to a private store in our own Amazon account, nobody else's, and they are deleted automatically after 400 days. We read them for faults and totals.
NO SOUND, AND NOTHING SOLD
Nothing on either site plays sound by itself: the audio guide and the game make noise only when you ask them to. Nothing is sold on these sites, and there is nothing here to join.
IF THIS CHANGES
If we ever switch anything else on, this page is changed first. It is meant to describe exactly what is running, not what we intend.
