OPENING SOON

The Exhibits

Admiral Vance's fleet, placed on permanent exhibit under the treaty: five ships moored nose to tail in a graveyard orbit, and one bowl of soup. None of them will ever fly again. That is rather the point.

The flagship SUPERIOR, side on: a long grey hull with gun turrets, a bridge tower and a big engine block at the stern.

EXHIBIT No. 1

THE SUPERIOR

Flagship

Admiral Vance's flagship and the pride of the fleet. The treaty says she may never fly again, so for eleven years she has been parked, polished and kept ready for visitors.

ENGINES
Present. Must not be started.
PARKED
By the Admiral herself. Backwards.
KEYCARD
Engineers only.

OPEN TO VISITORS IN THE PROLOGUE

  • The hangar deck: the Admiral's shuttle under a purple tarp, bay door 2, a morale poster with a mustache drawn on, a toolbox and the hatch to the mess.

    THE HANGAR DECK

  • The officers' mess: a table set for twelve under a flickering lamp, a porthole, Admiral Vance's portrait, a SNAX machine and the lift.

    THE OFFICERS' MESS

  • The bridge: the viewscreen, the tactical table, the captain's chair behind a velvet rope, and the tour robot's alcove.

    THE BRIDGE

Vance's Glory, side on: a carrier with a flat flight deck, two fighters parked on it and an island bristling with antennas.

EXHIBIT No. 2

VANCE'S GLORY

Carrier

The fleet's carrier. Her fighters are parked on deck exactly where they landed on the last day of the war, and the light in her comms room has never once been switched off.

FLIGHT DECK
Closed to traffic.
FIGHTERS
Two. Do not sit in them.

Visitors are also asked not to make the noises.

Vance's Mercy, side on: a rounded white hospital ship with a green stripe and rows of round ward windows.

EXHIBIT No. 3

VANCE'S MERCY

Hospital ship

The fleet's hospital ship. Every bed is made and every chart is filled in. Nobody has been ill aboard her for eleven years, and the staff take it personally.

BEDS
Four hundred. Made.
WAITING TIME
None.

The thermometers are original.

Vance's Plenty, side on: a long spine of mismatched cargo containers, a few of them missing, with a boxy bow and a crane.

EXHIBIT No. 4

VANCE'S PLENTY

Supply hulk

Everything the fleet ever needed, packed in containers on one long spine. Some of the containers are missing. The quartermaster knows which ones, and will tell you.

CONTENTS
Counted.
CRANE
Parked.

Please don't ask the quartermaster about the missing containers unless you have the afternoon free.

Little Vance, side on: a tiny minesweeper with a dish too big for it, trailing a sweep cable with one mine still caught on it.

EXHIBIT No. 5

LITTLE VANCE

Minesweeper · The children's wing

The smallest ship in the fleet and our children's wing. She swept the shipping lanes clear during the war, and still has one mine on her cable to show for it.

SUITABLE FOR
All ages.
THE MINE
A replica.

The museum is almost sure the mine is a replica.

Lot 88: a bowl of fossilised green soup with a spoon standing up in it, on a plinth with a brass plate reading 88.

LOT 88

SOUP

Soup, fossil

Served in the officers' mess on the last night of the war, and never finished. It has since set. The spoon has been standing up on its own for eleven years.

FOUND
The officers' mess, at a table set for twelve.

CHEF
Cookie, who would like the bowl back.

Please do not lick the exhibits.
